GLAM Leader Interview- [NakHyun Choi]

  1. Please tell me about yourself.

I’m NakHyun Choi and I’m the leader of the GLAM 9th. I’m in my senior year at Chung-Ang University and I study civil engineering.

  1. What do glams do? Also, please tell me what has changed due to COVID-19.

The GLAMs help exchange students with adapting to campus life and living in Korea. We usually met exchange students in person before but most offline programs have been canceled due to COVID-19. However, we support them for immigration, self-quarantine, and health-related issues.  We also introduce partner universities to domestic students and Chung-Ang University to foreign universities online.

  1. Please tell me about the GLAM organizational structure.

GLAM 9th consists of 24 students and will be working in Teams listed below for one year from July 2020 to June 2021.

• Management Team (3 members)

The role of the Management Team is to manage the overall duties of GLAM. Also, we work as a link between the international department, all GLAM members.

• Planning Team (5 members)

The planning team organizes overall activities of GLAM. During our planning process, we always put our best effort to reflect the feedback from previous events. In short, we play a role like a bridge to communicate with other teams.

• Business Team (7 members)

The business team meets exchange students closest and helps with overall work. Also, we manage the Global Lounge and the K Lounge, which are representative programs of GLAM. Finally, we are going to regularly upload helpful posts on the CAU exchange blog.

•  Design Team (9 members)

Along with helping out exchange students’ daily lives in Korea, each of the members in the team strive their best to provide students with enjoyable contents. School Social Media, vlogs or any other contents are edited at our hands.

  1. Why did you decide to become a GLAM and a GLAM leader?

I wanted to do something meaningful before graduation. There are various activities in the campus, but GLAM was attractive to represent the university internationally. I also liked the fact that I can have a lot of interactions with foreigners.

We voted to select the leader and I became a president of the GLAM. At first, I had no intention of becoming a leader, and I wasn’t sure if I could do well. However, getting a lot of votes in the election gave me confidence and I decided to become a leader.

  1. What kind of difficulties do you face as a GLAM & leader? And what have you learned?

Although face-to-face activities have decreased, there have been many work related to COVID-19. It was the first time without a manual, and it was hard because there were many unexpected situations. However, I learned how to deal with crisis and handle it online.

It was impossible for all 24 GLAMs to gather, and it was the most difficult as a leader to unite 24 GLAMs. To get closer to each other, I tried to meet with them personally or contact each other a lot. It was meaningful to me because I worked in this difficult situation and learned a lot.
